about

Closing Medley has been a staple of Aberdeen’s live performances, often positioned at the end of the set to close out the show on a figurative high note. This recorded version is centered around bassist Janek Gwizdala’s composition “The Space in Between”, a melody that Aberdeen’s bandleader Brian Plautz views as reminiscent of his high school career playing saxophone in a live hip hop group. Adam Neely plays a beautifully crafted bass solo which seamlessly morphs into a continued improvisation by guitarist Alex Conroy, as if the bass transforms into a guitar. Zach Mullings takes a wild drum solo, followed by original material by Shubh Saran and Brian Plautz—a moment in the track inspired by the New York live hip-hop jam session scene. This material segues into Aberdeen’s take on Trombone Shorty’s “Suburbia” a tune covered by Brian Plautz’s previously mentioned high school hip-hop group. The ending brings the listener back to the beginning “The Space In Between” melody, this time as slow and heavy as possible. Given that the genre “minimalist music” exists, there’s an implication that “maximalist music” must also exist today. Closing Medley, and more specifically the ending, would be a great example of Aberdeen at full maximalism.
